FAQ's

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialist type of dentistry which focuses on straightening and realigning teeth, helping to improve a patient’s bite, smile and general appearance. It deals with the prevention and treatment of both dental and facial irregularities.

How is orthodontic treatment carried out?

Orthodontic treatment is carried out through various types of braces. These include everything from fixed appliances, like ceramic braces and state-of-the-art lingual braces, to removable systems such as Invisalign. There is something to suit everyone and your orthodontist will prescribe the most suitable treatment for your individual needs.

What are the benefits of orthodontic treatments?

Orthodontics can help improve your smile and appearance which will naturally boost your confidence and self-esteem. It can also help you to avoid any potential dental problems in future.

At what age can I have orthodontic treatments?

People of all ages can benefit from orthodontic treatments. It’s recommended that children aged between seven and 11 years old receive an evaluation to see whether treatment is required.

How much will it cost?

The cost will depend entirely upon the level of treatment required. Our treatment co-ordinators will discuss the treatment options available to you. For those wishing to spread the cost, we also offer a range of payment options.   See our fee guide for more information.

How long will the treatments take?

Following the initial consultation, patients will need to see their orthodontist every six to eight weeks to have their braces adjusted accordingly. Most treatments will take between six months and two-and-a-half-years.

Will the treatment hurt?

There may be some discomfort when an appliance is first fitted or adjusted. However, this will normally wear off in just a couple of days. We advise mild pain killers such as Ibuprofen or Paracetamol to ease any pain.

How do I care for my braces and teeth?

You should continue to have regular checkups with your dentist while receiving any orthodontic treatment. Make sure you clean your teeth and appliance carefully every day and avoid sugary food and drink, particularly hard and sticky foods that could damage your braces. We have care guides on how to look after my removable braces, how to look after my fixed braces and retainers and after treatment care.
