Braces For Kids: What To Expect
Getting braces feels like a big decision. Not just for you as a parent, but for you child too.
Sometimes your desires for your child may differ to their needs and wants, and you’re struggling to make the right decision.
Starting your child’s orthodontic journey is an important decision as it’s so much more than straight teeth – it’s about increasing their confidence, ensuring their oral health is on track and giving them a smile they’ll keep forever.
At Turret Orthodontics we do not have a one-size fits all. But before we can treat, we need to diagnose and understand you’re your child’s needs. Maybe they have issues with wonky teeth or gappy teeth? Our first step is to find out what your child’s orthodontic needs are.
Do you know what your child’s orthodontics diagnosis is?
- Overbite
- Under bite
- Open bite
- Cross bite
- Spacing and Crowding
- Vertical and transverse problems
- Functional and facial considerations
Every child is different, and so is every smile. That’s why we take the time to get to know each patient and their family, ensuring we create a journey that feels personal and supportive in Liverpool, Manchester and Warrington. Most orthodontic treatments will take two years. Therefore, choosing a practice that will look after your child from day one is what every family deserves.
Why start orthodontic treatment early and when is the right time to start?
Starting earlier than you might think can make a huge difference. Dealing with overcrowding, or bite problems, when children are as young as 6 years old, can prevent issues later on, as well as further expense.
What Is Early Intervention?
Early intervention, also known as interceptive orthodontic or phase one orthodontic treatment describes the first stage of orthodontic care, usually completed before all adult teeth erupt.
If we can catch these issues early, then we can guide your child’s teeth and jaw into the right positions while they’re still growing. This has a massive impact as it not only sets them up for better oral health, but it can also improve eating, speaking, which can have a positive impact on self-esteem.
What Is The First Step In Orthodontics?
Having a chat with a specialist orthodontist should be the first step to ensure you get the best advice possible.
At Turret Orthodontics, we work hard to create an experience that’s welcoming, supportive, and tailored to your child’s needs. From the very first consultation, we’re here to make sure you are presented with the right treatment options, followed by the expert care and treatment.
Step One: Getting to know you and your child
You will have a chat with one of our treatment coordinators about some of our treatment options and associated costs. We will ask you to send through some pictures of your child’s teeth from 5 different angles, so that we can get a good view of your child’s teeth and jaw. The orthodontist will look at your photographs and draft a first stage treatment plan to see what options are available to you.
If you are happy with the treatment plan options at the first stage, then we can arrange for you to meet the orthodontist for a full treatment plan. We’ll sit down with you and your child to talk about their any concerns you both might have. Whether your child is worried about their teeth being crooked, or you’re noticing issues like difficulty biting or jaw discomfort, we’ll make sure your voices are heard.
Step Two: A closer look and meet the orthodontist
If you are happy with the treatment plan options at the first stage, then we can arrange for you to meet the orthodontist for a full treatment plan. We’ll gather all the details we need to plan the best treatment for your child. This includes an X-ray, a 3D scan of their teeth, and photos of their smile from different angles. These tools allow us to get a full understanding of their teeth and jaw, so we can create a plan that’s as precise and effective as possible. Then we’ll sit down with you and your child to talk about any concerns you both might have. Whether your child is worried about their teeth being crooked, or you’re noticing issues like difficulty biting or jaw discomfort, we’ll make sure your voices are heard.
This part of the process might sound technical, but we make it fun and interactive for kids. Seeing the 3D model of their teeth is often a highlight, and it helps them feel more involved in their treatment journey.
Step Three: Choosing The Right Braces
Together, we’ll talk about treatment options and their benefits, like orthodontic braces, Spark clear aligners, Angel Aligners, and Invisalign. Our treatment coordinator will sit down with you to go over everything in detail, using models and images to make sure it all feels clear and easy to understand.
We’ll also talk about what braces cost for kids and the payment options at your disposal. The good news? The consultation fee is deducted from the overall cost if you decide to go ahead with treatment.
The care you child will receive throughout the journey
Your child will have routine appointments every 10–12 weeks, and their progress will be reviewed regularly by our orthodontic specialists. We also check in via WhatsApp or phone to make sure they’re feeling positive and calm about their treatment. Because we know that how busy life can get, our dedicated treatment coordinators will personally arrange appointments or answering any questions.
