Clear Aligners: Understanding the Stages of Treatment Planning

Invisalign, Spark and Angel Aligners

Straightening your teeth is no longer limited to fixed braces. Clear aligners offer a discreet, removable way to improve the position of your teeth, but there’s much more to treatment than simply wearing a series of trays.

Successful aligner treatment starts with careful assessment and planning. Your teeth, bite and treatment goals all need to be considered before your first aligner is fitted.

At Turret Orthodontics, this journey can begin from the comfort of your own home with a free virtual consultation, before progressing to a full assessment and personalised treatment plan.

What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners (like invisalign, angel aligners and spark aligners) are a series of custom-made, removable trays that gradually move your teeth into planned positions. Each aligner is slightly different from the last, applying controlled pressure to move your teeth step by step.

They can be used to treat a range of orthodontic concerns, including crowding, spacing and certain bite problems. However, aligners aren’t automatically suitable for everyone.

That’s why our first step is understanding your teeth, your bite and what you’d like to achieve.

Stage 1: Your initial enquiry

Your journey with Turret Orthodontics can begin online. Once you’ve submitted an enquiry and provided some basic information, our team will contact you to arrange a free virtual consultation at a convenient time. If you’d prefer to meet us in person from the beginning, you can also choose to book a paid face-to-face consultation instead. The initial consultation gives you an opportunity to understand what treatment could involve before deciding whether you’d like to take things further.

Stage 2: Photos and your free virtual consultation

Before your virtual consultation, we’ll send you a simple tutorial showing you how to take photos of your teeth at home. You’ll send these to us before your appointment so they can be reviewed ahead of your call and provide an initial picture of your smile. During the consultation, we’ll discuss what you’d like to achieve and whether clear aligners, fixed braces or another orthodontic approach could potentially be suitable. We’ll also talk you through likely treatment length, how frequently you may need appointments, what treatment could involve, retention after treatment and a ballpark indication of costs. This gives you a clearer understanding of your potential treatment journey before committing to a full clinical consultation.

Stage 3: Your face-to-face assessment

If you’d like to explore treatment further, we’ll invite you to Turret Orthodontics for a full face-to-face consultation, with no obligation to proceed afterwards. This allows us to examine your teeth and bite in greater detail and gather the information needed to determine which treatment options are appropriate. Orthodontic planning isn’t only about making individual teeth appear straighter. We also need to consider how your teeth fit together and how moving one tooth could affect others.

Stage 4: Digital scanning and treatment planning

If you decide to proceed with clear aligners, detailed digital records of your teeth are taken to begin planning your treatment. Your proposed tooth movements can then be mapped out stage by stage. Rather than all your teeth simply moving at once, different movements may need to happen at different points during treatment. For example, space may need to be created before another tooth can move, while some teeth may require small attachments to help the aligner apply pressure in the correct direction. This digital plan effectively becomes the roadmap for your aligner treatment.

Stage 5: Reviewing your treatment plan

One of the key differences with clear aligners is that much of your treatment is planned before you wear your first tray. The proposed movements can be reviewed to consider not only how your teeth could look at the end of treatment, but also how they’re expected to move and how your bite should function. This is why two people wearing clear aligners may have completely different treatment plans, even if their smiles initially appear similar.

Stage 6: Starting your aligner treatment

Once your treatment plan has been finalised and your aligners have been produced, you’re ready to get started. Your aligners are worn in sequence, with each one continuing the planned movement from the previous stage. We’ll explain how to wear and care for them, when they should be changed and any other requirements specific to your treatment. If attachments are needed, these may also be placed onto certain teeth to help achieve particular movements.

Stage 7: Monitoring your progress

Although your tooth movements are planned in advance, your progress still needs to be monitored throughout treatment.Regular reviews allow us to check that your teeth are moving as expected and your aligners are fitting correctly. Sometimes teeth respond differently than originally anticipated. If necessary, further scans or refinement aligners may be used to adjust the treatment plan and continue working towards the intended result.

Stage 8: Retention

Reaching your planned tooth position isn’t quite the end of your orthodontic journey. Teeth naturally have a tendency to move after orthodontic treatment, which is why retainers are important. We’ll explain your retention regime and how to wear your retainers to help maintain the position of your teeth. Retention isn’t an afterthought — it’s part of your treatment journey from the beginning.
