When to consider Early Orthodontics for your child

What Constitutes Early Orthodontic Treatment?

Early orthodontic treatment, also known as interceptive orthodontics, involves addressing orthodontic issues in children before all their permanent teeth erupt. This typically occurs between the ages of 6 and 11.

Why might my child need to start orthodontic treatment early?

There are early signs of orthodontic Issues.  As parents, you should be vigilant for signs such as difficulty chewing, speech problems, mouth breathing, or visible alignment issues, prompting early orthodontic consultations.  It is important to start having open communication and collaboration with orthodontic professionals to ensure you are well-informed and actively involved in your child’s treatment.

The benefits of providing Interceptive Orthodontic Treatment:

  • An early specialist orthodontic assessment for children has become increasingly recognised as a good proactive approach to address and prevent potential dental issues.
  • It can prevent future problems such as trauma, sticky-out teeth, unhealthy habits.
  • In some cases, it is possible there are less, or no extraction of teeth needed.
  • There are improvements in overbites, underbites, and crossbites; which impact aesthetics and longevity of teeth.
  • It can address discrepancies in jaw size and alignment.
  • It can create space and manage overcrowding to accommodate permanent teeth.
  • It can create a wider smile.
  • It can help address jaw and palate issues, improving speech development.

How does it work?

Comprehensive Assessment

Early orthodontic treatment begins with a thorough evaluation, including X-rays and assessments of tooth and jaw development. Orthodontists create personalised treatment plans based on the child’s unique needs, ensuring targeted and effective interventions.

At Turret Orthodontics, we use Angel Aligners for kids for our Early Orthodontic Treatment.  Angel Aligners for kids has proven to produce outstanding results.

Angel Aligners for Kids

There are two phases to Angel Aligners for Kids Treatment:

Phase 1

This treatment can last up to two years and can start as early as six years old. Your child will receive an unlimited number of aligners during this phase to treat primary and mixed dentition, allowing for permanent teeth to erupt. It is suitable for mild to moderate dental malocclusion, and our orthodontist can advise you whether your child is suitable for treatment.

Phase 2

This treatment can last up to five years and must follow on from phase 1. Your child will receive an unlimited number of aligners during this phase to treat permanent dentition, now that all adult teeth have erupted. It is suitable for moderate to severe dental malocclusion. During your consultation, your orthodontist will advise you which treatment options should follow phase 1 and how long the treatment will take.

Orthodontic issues can contribute to speech impediments. Early intervention helps address jaw and palate issues, improving speech development.

Financial Considerations and Long-Term Cost Savings for Patients

While early orthodontic treatment incurs initial costs, it can be a cost-effective approach by preventing more extensive and expensive interventions in the future. Preventing severe orthodontic issues early on can lead to long-term financial savings by reducing the need for complex treatments and potential dental complications.   Additionally, there are payment plans available to help patients spread the cost over the length of treatment.  At Turrets we have a number of payment plan options, providing parents with peace of mind.
